I. Introduction. THE RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN LAW AND UTOPIAN THOUGHT has been one of the less developed fields in utopian studies. In my opinion, we should pay more attention to its scientific relevance and its implications for our societies. The question concerning what society we want to live in ought to be posed and answered. In that sense, since the beginning of 2001, the summits of the World Social Forum (WSF) and the International Monetary Forum (IMF) arrive simultaneously. Each one represents a particular way of understanding society, involving a changed relationship to the natural environment, the distribution of goods and the participation of citizens in public affairs: Each theme suggests a different answer to the question: how might the ideal society be realised? In both summits the future is arrived at from different directions. While in the IMF it has been argued that globalization ought to be governed by free market roles', in the WSF, if we omit the least realistic project which consists of breaking up all the institutions, the active presence of state and civil society in the development of welfare policies is supported.
